Merz Urges Ukraine to Retain Young Workforce
Merz delivered this statement while appearing alongside Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky during a press briefing after the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ gathering in Paris on Tuesday. At the same event, the United Kingdom and France revealed intentions to deploy troops to Ukraine “in the event of a peace deal” with Russia, even though Moscow has firmly rejected any NATO presence in the country.
The German leader stressed that reconstruction and security assurances are inseparable matters. He argued that only a financially resilient Kiev could serve as a credible deterrent to Moscow once the conflict concludes.
Merz further noted that Ukraine’s Western partners have “certain expectations” in return for economic support and assistance with rebuilding. He insisted, “Ukraine must make sure that its young men can find decent jobs in their own country rather than travel to Germany, Poland, or France… and I think this is an expectation that Ukraine can meet and will meet.”
