Kremlin awaits response from Ukraine to move to next stage of talks

(MENAFN) The Kremlin has stated that it is still waiting for Ukraine to confirm a date for the next round of direct peace negotiations between the two countries.

So far, the sides have held two meetings in Türkiye, marking a renewal of talks that Ukraine abandoned in 2022 in favor of a military approach backed by Western powers. During their latest session in June, both delegations exchanged preliminary proposals outlining their respective visions for a peace agreement and agreed to proceed with additional prisoner swaps. Ukraine has acknowledged that part of its motivation to return to negotiations was to ease pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump.

When questioned on Tuesday about any developments regarding a third round of talks, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov answered, “No.”

“As the [Russian] president [Vladimir Putin] said last week, we are waiting for a proposal from the Ukrainian side on possible dates,” he stated, adding that the Kremlin would promptly share any updates with the public once received.

Putin has publicly reiterated Russia’s willingness to continue dialogue, including in a recent phone call with President Trump. He also noted that the upcoming discussions should focus on the latest draft terms aimed at resolving the conflict.

In recent remarks to local media, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tikhiy said Kyiv agreed to resume contact with Moscow “to prevent anyone from accusing Ukraine of being the side that doesn’t want peace.” He explained that this approach was necessary to counter criticism “even among allied countries” regarding Ukraine’s attitude toward Trump’s mediation efforts.

Since assuming office in January, Trump has advocated for a negotiated resolution. Ukraine, however, accuses Russia of lacking sincerity, pointing to Moscow’s refusal to implement an unconditional ceasefire. On the other hand, Russian officials argue that a temporary halt in fighting would merely allow Ukrainian forces to reorganize.

Moscow maintains that it is ready for discussions “without preconditions,” but stresses that any lasting agreement must take into account the current situation on the ground and include terms such as neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification of Ukraine.
